Europe spends only €42 per person per year, less than 2% of the health-care costs, on biomedical research, whereas the USA spends up to 3 times more. These deficiencies have been described in a manifest published in The Lancet journal correspondence section, with the participation of Isabel Varela-Nieto and Josef Syka (TARGEAR), about the need of increasing public investment in biomedical research in EU.
