Marie Curie PhD post-doctoral position in the lab of Neurobiology of Hearing (Institute of Biomedical Research, Madrid)

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Isabel Varela-Nieto starting from the 1st of March 2015 at the Institute for Biomedical Research (CSIC-UAM) in Madrid

We are seeking a highly motivated early stage researcher candidate to join our laboratory of Neurobiology of Hearing in a European Commission-funded Marie Curie IAPP network “TARGEAR-Targeting challenges of active ageing: innovative integrated strategies for healing age-related hearing loss”. IAPPs offer early stage researchers the opportunity to improve their research skills, join established research groups at both public and private sectors and enhance their career prospects.

TARGEAR will train a new generation of neuroscientists in cutting edge research in neurobiology of age-related hearing loss ( The network unites European laboratories with complementary expertise in hearing loss, developmental biology, functional neurobiology and cell signalling and two full partners from industry, MED-EL and Affichem.

The project will be conducted at the Institute for Biomedical Research located at the Medical School campus of the UAM in Madrid, with a six-month visit to an industrial partner of TARGEAR. The research project will focus on the study of the genetic, molecular and cellular bases of age-related hearing loss. It involves the use of in vitro and in vivo models to understand the biology of inner ear neural cells and investigate the factors that could prevent or restore hearing loss.

Profile requirements
PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary or Medicine with
Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, (stem) cell culture, animal handling, cell signalling and at least one first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal.
Experience in bioinformatics and/or hearing research is a plus.

Written applications in English should include a CV, summary of work experience, a one page assay describing your research interest and contact information for two references. Please send applications until January 9th 2015 to Isabel Varela-Nieto (
