Inhibition of MMP-2 but not MMP-9 Influences Inner Ear Spiral Ganglion Neurons In Vitro

This paper presents a robust assay to asses the role of metalloproteinanses in neuritogenesis and neurite extension in spiral ganglion explants. The role of these proteases in the developing inner ear is very limited, but It seems that their modulation, could be important to prevent hearing loss. In addition, the in vitro model to evaluate neuritogenesis is simple an useful to study other pathways potentially involved in this process.
